Abstract
Character sketching, is a genre of prose about a human being in which character of a person is studied. Personality is a piece of writing or article that gives a strong impression of a person. The tradition of character sketching in Urdu is not very old. 
Muhammad Hussain Azad's(10Th June1830-22nd January1910) book “Aab-e-Hayat” is considered to be the first book of sketching in Urdu literature, which in turn gave the consciousness of sketches. After Muhammad Hussain Azad in 1927, Mirza Farhatullah Baig (1st September 1883-27th April 1947) wrote “ Nazir Ahmad ke kahani”. After this a series of Urdu sketches started and
continues to increasing day by day.
Mumtaz Mufti (11thSeptember1905 till 27thOctober1995) is one of the great names in the history of Urdu literature. His creation began with fiction in 1936, but in addition to that he also made a unique contribution to genres like novels, travelogue, essay, drama and Sketching. In the field of character sketching Mumtaz Mufti published four prominent books, naming; “piaz k chilkay” in 1968, “okhey loag” in1986, “oar okhey loag” in 1990 and “okhey olray” published in 1995.
“Alakh nagri” is the second part of Mumtaz Mufti's autobiography۔ It covers his life from 1957 to 1992. The study of “Alakh nagri” shows different features of his writing style.
There are samples of his character sketches, examples of which will be discussed in this article.
