Abstract

It is a fact that literature mirrors life but the description of animals is rarely found in it despite the reality that animals have been close partners of human beings since the earlist generations. Social animal continued forgetting animals after he bade farewell to his primitive jungle life. Western literature is rich with the tradition of animal characterization but Urdu short story has only a few names with Sayyid Rafique Hussain at top of the list. His short stories collection "Aaena-a-Hairat" has a number of animal characters. This article deals with the introduction, research and criticism of his stories. Though, unlike the western and few Urdu writers, He has not depicted his animal characters symbolically, yet many of his animal characters symbolize human figures. Sayyid Rafique Hussain has deep observation about animals.
